Miss PhD

It occurred to me that some of my (very few) readers continue to follow my blog in order to find out how my defense went. In Denmark a defense is public and merely a formality, despite it being a very challenging formality for the defendant. I was certainly challenged but every body assured me that I did a good job. After the hangovers are getting lighter and lighter, I can't help being a bit annoyed about the questioning section though. I didn't have any energy, was burned out from my one hour talk and basically went blank a couple of times. Everyone who saw the session knew me well enough to say that they have seen a 'spikier' me, which comforted me as well as the knowledge that I had to perform worse than that to fail. But what annoys me the most is the fact that the committee added as sentence about my 'not so defending' defense in my final statement; I just hope that people reading that statement will all have tried to be in such fake situation as a defense is, and not think that that is representative of who I am in my daily life. Whatever, I got my PhD, no one can take that away from me now.

Woo-hoo! Congrats and glad you survived! As my Masters thesis advisor said, don't worry about the defense. People will only read the journal articles you crank out of the thesis anyway :-)
